A New Way to See: Photography for Your Homeschool Day

A favorite corner of the backyard. Light falling across the kitchen table. An object that holds a special memory.
For a young person with a camera, everyday moments can become opportunities to notice, reflect, and share something about themselves. Photography offers homeschool families a creative starting point for learning - and for conversations that might otherwise be difficult to begin.
At 100cameras, we help young people build confidence, explore their emotions, and tell their stories through photography. Our self-paced online activities bring together art, storytelling, and social-emotional learning, using any digital camera or smartphone. No photography experience is needed.
An invitation to share their perspective
Ask two children to photograph the same space, and they may show you entirely different worlds. One notices a pattern of shadows. Another focuses on a well-loved toy.
Looking at those photographs together creates room for curiosity: What caught your attention? Why did you choose to show it this way? What would you like someone else to understand?
The photograph gives children something concrete to talk about, while allowing them to choose how much they want to share. There is no single right answer or perfect image.
Try a simple photo activity together
Set aside 20–30 minutes and invite your child to take three photographs:
Something that brings them joy.
Something that represents a challenge.
Something they are curious about.
These can be objects, places, colors, or details around your home or on a walk. Encourage them to make their own choices about what each prompt means.
Afterward, invite your child to select one photograph to discuss or write about. You might ask, “What does this photograph mean to you?” or “Is there a story behind it?”
Let them lead the explanation. If they would rather keep a photograph or its meaning private, leave room for that, too.
Make room for creative discovery
Photography can become a journal, a starting point for creative writing, or a way to explore a changing season. It can also offer a welcome reason to step away from a worksheet and engage with the world nearby.
For families seeking more structure, 100cameras’ self-paced Semester Packs offer guided photography and storytelling activities that fit into your homeschool rhythm.
